Christianity Explored Introduction

Christianity Explored is a short introduction to finding out about God, who He is and why Jesus his son came to this world to save us. It is a friendly and relaxed time where you can meet with us in an informal and casual place. We will provide free food and something to drink, we will answer as many questions as you have, and there will be a short video to watch each time.

The time together is completely non-judgemental and there is no pressure or awkward questions, just a free and open time to relax and hear about our creator.

We will meet one night a week for just over 2 hours for about 7 to 8 weeks. You will not be asked to speak openly at any time, just come with an open mind and an open heart.

We have tried to answer some common questions about Christianity below. Please click on the questions to reveal our answers.

  • Can you trust the Bible ?

The Bible is the Word of God. It's truth is without question as God does not lie and only speaks the truth.
How can it be the Word of God if it was written by people thousands of years ago? This is a logical and understandable question, and the answer to that lies in the people that wrote it.

The old testament (the first part of the Bible) was written by followers of God who were spoken to by God either directly, or through His Holy Spirit. There were many prophecies spoken by these early men of God, with every prophecy coming true within it's time. So many of the events within the old testament have also been proved by archaeological findings, and even some of the events that were initially thought to be untrue by historians have later been found to be true and accurate.

The new testament (the latter part of the bible) carries a different line of evidence. All of the "people" who wrote the new testament witnessed Jesus in the flesh. Jesus is and was the Son of God, and they spent years with Him, witnessing His great miracles, seeing Him bring the dead back to life, curing the sick, and preaching the word of God - "the good news" to thousands of people.

These were His Disciples and followers who also saw Jesus crucified on the cross (a painful and agonising death), and saw Him rise from the dead 3 days later. Thousands of His followers including most of His disciples were brutally killed by the authorities for their belief in Jesus, and it is sure they did not die for something that was not true.

  • Does science prove that God does not exist?

There are many scientists who for many years who have tried to prove that God does not exist. The Bible tells us that God created the heavens and the earth, it tells us that God created us and the animals, trees and the wonderful things that we see every day. Many scientists try to tell us that this was all created by an "accident" millions of years ago, where it all just came together from absolutely nothing.

They try and tell us that everything from the stars in the sky, the world we live in, the wonderful animals, the beautiful birds, the insects, the glorious flowers, the trees, and even the water we drink all came about from absolutely nothing. They tell us that all the animals, fish, and all the variety of life on this planet not to mention you and me, just happened by a series of random changes from a single cell.

The truth however is actually easier to understand and believe. This is that someone far far greater and mightier than us, and even greater than we can comprehend made it for us; that someone is God.

So while man desperately tries to elevate himself and produce fantastic claims as to how we came to exist without the existence of God, the truth is that man uses his own data to prove his own data, and unless we start from the truth, everything will be wrong.

  • Why is there so much suffering?

If we look at the world today and see the suffering, and the pain and heartache that goes with it, we would be forgiven for asking ourselves. "if there is a God, why does He allow it".

So lets just look at this problem, we would like to get rid of all the suffering in the world today? So lets get rid of the rulers who kill thousands, the rapists and the murderers. That would be a good start, but then lets get rid on the thieves, the violent people, the scammers, the people that break and destroy the towns and cities we live in; that would be even better but not yet perfect. There is still pain a suffering from people who hate you, people you argue with, relationships that go wrong and cause pain, broken friendships, people that don't help when they should, broken promises etc... The list goes on. The problem is most of us fit into the last category, so lets get rid of ourselves??? Oh but that wouldn't work would it, there would be nobody left.

The truth is that almost since the beginning of the world, there has been fighting and suffering. It is because we have chosen to look away from the God who created us and to live our own lives without following Him. We have thought we know better than God, a better way, but we were wrong.

But we have been given a second chance; that is exactly why Jesus came to this earth to pay the price for our sin and disobedience and to give us that chance. He has provided a new world called heaven where those of us who accept Him as our God, and follow Him as was intended in the beginning can live without any suffering, any death, any pain or misery for ever!

  • Do all ways lead to heaven?

Many people say, "it doesn't matter what religion you follow, it all leads to the same destination".

When God first made the earth and everything that is in it, man (and woman) disobeyed Him. In doing this, they effectively said "we want to go our own way, we don't need God to guide us or help us". In going their own way, they soon started to want to have their own gods. The devil who had persuaded man to turn away from God, persuaded man again to create their own gods. He wanted to do anything to guide man away from the true God and maker of us and this world. Other religions are a distraction, and are not created by God, or indeed are His will.

It's a bit like having a diamond, think of God as a perfect diamond. If many people that are looking for a diamond are shown an imitation diamond, they could be persuaded to believe it is real. It may even look more shiny or more attractive in some ways, but it isn't real and never will be. For this reason many follow other gods, but they are not real, there is only one God, and only one God who cares enough about us, and loves each and every one of us so much, that He sent His only Son Jesus Christ to die for us to pay for our sins and bad ways.

  • I am a good person - I will be ok !

It is a common thought, that whatever religion you follow, or even if you are an atheist and don't follow any religion, that if you have been a good or fairly good person you will go to a place like heaven when you die. People say this because in our way of thinking, if you are not a murderer, a rapist, a thief, or someone really bad then you must go somewhere nice when you leave this world.

It is, to a certain point understandable that we may believe this. After all nobody's perfect, but many of us try and do good things and be kind to others.

Think about the world we live in, it isn't perfect, in fact it is a long way from perfect. Man has turned the world into a place of murder, rape, violence and suffering. Even if we are not that bad, maybe a good person, we still lie, sometimes cheat, get angry, don't always help when we should, become envious or jealous, and many other similar things.

God wants us to live in a perfect world, without disease, pain, stress, anger, jealousy, lies, and all those things that make life a bit of a struggle. If we are to live in a perfect world, how can He let us in to heaven if we are not perfect. So no one can actually enter, because no one is perfect or good enough!

It would be if we relied on our own ability to get to heaven, but we don't have to, because Jesus paid the price for our sins and gave everyone that would believe in Him the free gift of eternity in heaven with Him. For he has paid for our sins and we can enter heaven made perfect by Him.

  • Does God even exist?
If God does not exist, life has no meaning. If your life is destined just to end in death, then it doesn't matter how you live as after your death everything has ceased.

If God does not exist, then we must all live our short life without hope. If there is no God, then there can be no hope for a deliverance from the life on this earth and for a better life to come.

However, if God does exist then not only does there become a meaning to this life, but this life and it's meaning becomes the stepping stone to eternity in a place of our choosing. If we then believe in God, and follow His ways, we have chosen Him to lead us to that place in eternity that will be an endless and perfect life without pain or suffering. If God does exist then there is also the opportunity to learn about Him, and ultimately get to know Him. As God clearly loves us and wants us to be happy in this life as well as the next, then He becomes a loving friend that will never fail us and never leave us.

Although this does not prove His existence, it does show that the existence of God would make a massive difference to how we live our lives, and the meaning that our lives have. The Bible states, “1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. 2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. 3 There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. 4 Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun” Psalm 19:1-4.
  • I am too bad to go to heaven !

Some people reject God because they say they are too good and don't need God to guide them or forgive them for their sins. There are many people however that have led a doubtful life, and some know that the acts they have done have been terribly wrong.

The devil will tell those people that they are too bad to ask God for forgiveness, that God does not help or forgive those that have carried out bad things in their life; this however is a lie from the devil himself, put into peoples minds to make them feel there is no hope for them. So can God forgive those people?

The answer is Yes, yes, and defiantly yes! There is absolutely nothing too big and no person too bad for God to forgive. Great isn't it.

We can be forgiven, but we must say sorry, to the One whom we have wronged—that is, God and feel sorry in our heart for our sins. Sin makes us miserable; God’s forgiveness makes us free. Acts 10:v43. We must also turn to God and genuinely follow Him and we will have a wonderful friend and guide for this life, and a glorious eternity waiting in Heaven.

  • Can anyone help me?

We live in a world of pain, suffering and death, some of us never get to know God because we think we can live our lives by ourselves. Well we only have to look at the world around us to know that this does not work, and to reject God is also to reject His help, and the wonderful gifts He has for us.

Many of us however realise that the world we live in, some of the people we meet, the stress, anxiety and sadness we go through are part of life that we would rather not have. We realise that we cannot rise above these things, and very often this makes us feel lonely, forgotten, helpless or in some way out of control. This brings us down and makes us unhappy.

There is an answer however; God loves us more than we can realise. He wants us to turn to Him, to ask Him for forgiveness of the things we have done wrong. If we turn to Him and follow in His ways, He promises to be with us and guide us and help us through all the troubles this life has to throw at us. He is the greatest friend we could ever know; He is our God.

You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.....Psalm 139:1. For in him we live and move and have our being. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.....Acts 17:28. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.....Psalm 139:15-16. See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God And that is what we are!....1 John 3:1. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.....Psalm 34:18. But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.....Deuteronomy 4:29.
  • How can I come to know Jesus?
It tells us in the Bible that Jesus is calling us.

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me....Revelation 3:20. Jesus is knocking on our hearts asking to be let into our lives. He will not turn anyone away who truly comes to Him and follows Him. If you want to know how important it is to God that you turn to Him and accept His grace and love for us then read this verse in the Bible in the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.....Luke 15:10.

Knowing Jesus as your Savior, Friend and God is the most wonderful experience any of us can have in our lives.

All you must do is receive in faith the salvation that God offers (Ephesians 2:8-9). Fully trust and have faith that only Jesus and He alone has paid the price for your sins. Believe in Him, and you will not perish (John 3:16). God is offering you salvation as a gift of His grace to you. All you have to do is accept it. Jesus is the way of salvation (John 14:6).

You can pray a prayer to God to ask for that gift of salvation, and for Him to come into your life, and for you to follow Him. The following prayer is a suitable pray, that if prayed with honesty and sincerity will let Him know you accept Him.

    Dear Lord God,
I come to you as a sinner. I have done many things in my life that are wrong and don’t please you. I have lived my life for myself without looking to you. I am sorry for my sins and I repent. I ask you to forgive me. I fully believe that you died on the cross for me, to save me. You did what neither I or anyone else could do. I come to you now and ask you to come into my life, to live in me and to teach me how I may live a life pleasing to you. I thank you for your grace and love for me. Amen.

If you have prayed this prayer with meaning, and you follow God in your life, you are saved. If you live in Peacehaven or nearby why not come and meet with us on a Sunday morning, we would love to meet with you. ( service times are detailed below ).
